Clay Aiken的大學生活僅剩一個學期的時候，他選擇了休學，原因是他要全力競爭一項比賽，美國娛樂圈的大佬Simon Fuller打造的“American Idol”大賽，Kelly Clarkson和Justin Guarini分别是第一屆的冠亞軍，如今他們都已經成為美國觀眾眼中的偶像明星和媒體聚光燈下的寵兒。從2002年開始，激烈的競岛N已經展開，想要成為勝利者需要擁有非常出色的才藝和形象，經過嚴格的層層篩選，每輪比賽得到觀眾投票最多的選手可以晉級，經過了選拔之後，只有兩個人能夠進入决賽。Clay Aiken過關斬將，一路凱歌。其中一次現場演出的'Solitaire'幾乎令特別嘉賓評審Neil Sedaka感動落淚。Clay憑藉著自己的實力殺進了最终的决賽，另一个進入决賽的選手是Ruben Studdard。在2003年5月21日的决賽上，共有兩千四百萬名觀眾投票参加冠軍評選，Clay Aiken最终以非常微弱的劣勢敗给了Ruben Studdard(差1萬3000票，不到總票數的百分之一)，而成為了大賽亞軍，但是這同樣讓他獲得了和著名的RCA唱片公司簽約的機會。

　　在比賽结束不久以後的6月份，Clay Aiken發行了第一支單曲《This Is The Night》，立即就成為Billboard Hot 100單曲榜的冠军。2003年10月14日，Clay Aiken的第一張專輯《Measure of a Man》也正式上市發行。

同年Clay以黑馬之姿贏得American Music Awards(全美音樂獎)提名最受歡迎男藝人獎項的殊榮，並應邀在Billboard頒獎典禮中演出，可見得他成熟而低沉有力的演唱技巧實力已獲得大眾肯定！

而雖然屈居比賽亞軍，但Clay卻完全搶盡冠軍Ruben Studdard風采，憑藉着大賽積累的强大人氣，首周61萬3千張的銷量輕而易舉的就把他推到了Billboard 200排行榜的冠軍寶座上，而這一銷售成績達到了前任偶像大賽的冠軍Kelly Clarkson首周銷量的兩倍還要多，這一成績已經足夠讓在大賽中失意的Clay Aiken欣慰的了。Clay Aiken在偶像大賽中的表現，几乎征服了電視機前從12歲到40歲所有的女性觀眾的心。Clay也領先登上滾石雜誌封面，成為美國2003年歌壇一顆超級星。
