喬許·葛班洛在洛杉磯出生，父親是猶太人(俄羅斯人移民及擁有波蘭血統)，而母親則是挪威裔的美國人。他的父親在婚後改變信仰，成為一基督教徒。葛洛班的弟弟．基斯杜化，與他同一天生日，但則較他年輕四年。
葛洛班以歌手身份首次登台，是他七年級的時候，但是他很快便把它擱下了數年。他亦表示：「我很享受藝人的外觀，可是我的水平正在下降。我並不感覺到我有足夠的靈感，所以我去了 Bridges Academy 以提升我的水平至 A。」當葛洛班在Bridges Academy 的時候，他上普通課堂，由上午 9:00 至 下午1:00，然後出席有關劇場的課堂。他不但在學校演奏一便士哨子，還會演奏卡祖笛 （en:kazoo）。
在1997 及 1998，葛洛班在密西根大學參與了Interlochen Arts Camp，當他在學校外開始參加聲樂課堂，同時在Interlochen Arts Camp 又參與了音樂劇院。葛洛班表示：「我一方面開始上音樂課堂，而另一方面，我又很投入於音樂劇院。我擁有一把不錯的男中音聲線，所以我開始在學校參與演戲及唱歌的製作。」
於1998 年後期，時17歲的葛洛班被介紹到是他的聲樂教練 -- 葛萊美獎最佳製作人/編曲家的得主大衛．科士打（en:David Foster）。 他以試演歌手的身份，為科士打演出一系列的倍受注目的項目，包括1999年 的葛萊美獎，當時為 Andrea Bocelli 作代替人。葛洛班又與席琳·狄翁合唱科士打的歌曲「The Prayer」，以及在 1999年1月Gray Davis 當選加利福尼亞州州長的就職典禮。
葛洛班在1999年又出席 Los Angeles County High School for the Arts（en:Los Angeles County High School for the Arts），更為劇院重要人物及畢業生。及後在賓夕法尼亞州匹茲堡的卡內基梅隆大學中修讀戲劇。
