實現了我國航天史上多個首次：
首次月面採樣、月面起飛、月球軌道交會對接、
攜帶月球樣品返回等多個重大突破。

嫦娥五號於11月24日發射升空並進入地月轉移軌道。
12月1日，嫦娥五號著陸器和上升器組合體成功在月球正面預選區域著陸並開展採樣工作。
12月3日，上升器攜帶月球樣品點火起飛。
12月6日，上升器完成與軌道器和返回器組合體交會對接及樣品轉移，按計畫分離並受控落月。
12月17日，返回器與軌道器分離並重返地球。
按計畫，回收後的嫦娥五號返回器在完成必要的地面處理工作後，將空運至北京開艙，取出樣品容器及搭載物，並展開後續科學研究。
